What has the Chief Justice to say about Court’s legitimacy?

Chief Justice John Roberts affirmed the Court’s legitimacy, and described it as very upsetting to observe the emergence of barriers in the wake security concerns & public criticisms arising from the decisions in controversial cases.

He said that while opinions can be disagreed with, he believed it inappropriate to question the Court’s authority and integrity. The Court’s job it to determine the law. It will not be affected by public disagreements.

Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, Chief addressed the issue at a conference of United States Court of Appeals for Tenth Circuit in Colorado Springs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to attend the meeting last year. He also spoke out about the Court’s response.

Public opinion polls show that the Court’s approval rating is at its lowest level ever. This was due to disgruntled Democrats as well as independents. Robert spoke out about the challenges faced over the past 50 years, without mentioning any of the decisions.

Who’s Supreme Court Justice John Roberts Chief

George W. Bush nominated John Roberts in 2005 to be the Chief Justice of the USA. Roberts authored the opinions in several important cases including Shelby County, Riley, California and National Federation of Independent Business, v. Sebelius.

He was a federal judge of the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. He was a Circuit Judge for two years. He authored 49 opinions during that time, which inspired two dissenting opinions by other judges and three his own.

He wed Jane in 1996, on July 27th. Together, they adopted two children.
