Living in Canada, you can expect things to be a little more expensive, but fortunately, the average pay seems to match up with this!  What many don’t realize, though, is that not every city and home is as expensive as Toronto or Ontario.

These are some of the cheaper places to live in this gorgeous country that offer a chance at quiet affordability instead of expensive glamor.

Why Seek Cheaper Cities

If you’re just starting in your career, you may think that living in a large and expensive city can afford you more options and privileges, and you’d be right to an extent.

But, unfortunately, what many don’t realize is that when you want to start a family, or you’re ready to settle down, living in a city that’s too expensive will make you have to uproot everything once more to move somewhere that you can afford. It’s better to build a career in a small town that you can continue to grow in when it’s the time!

Sault Ste Marie, ON

If you want your breath taken away, try out Sault STE. Marie in Ontario.  This is an awesome location surrounded by beautiful nature and displayed like it was painted into its surroundings.

Everyone who lives here says they feel like they’ve stolen a piece of paradise, and it’s evident in the city’s higher mental health ratings.  This is an amazing place to get away for a vacation and an even better area to call home if you’re tired of the stress and labor of everyday life.

Calgary, AB

This is the largest city on this list, and it’s on it for anyone who still feels like they can’t give up bar hopping or fun restaurants.  Calgary is an incredible city that’s sprawled out enough to allow it to feel like a small town despite its massive population.

Calgary homes for sale are the most expensive on this list, but they’re also incredibly affordable compared to cities like Vancouver or Toronto.  This is a great city to vanish into if you want to start focusing on building a name for yourself.

Rimouski, QC

If you’re curious about the largest estuary in the world, with endless beautiful walking trails, sea kayaking, and bird watching: you’ll be thrilled to know that you can live on the precipice of it.

Rimouski, Quebec, is a small city that offers an opportunity to feel like you’ve vanished into a college town without having to deal with the constant noise and headaches of city living.  There’s a great work-life balance here and affordable rent that ensures anyone could call it home.

Abbotsford, BC

If you want an affordable and wonderful place to live, Abbotsford feels like stepping into a fairytale.  This is the least expensive big city in British Columbia and has work available for everything from aerospace, construction, and trade to healthcare and manufacturing.

The gorgeous warm summers make this area feel like a vacation town, and the incredible access to fresh foods could make this a paradise for anyone who visits.
